How will the continuation of corruption in Mexico affect their economy?
When this assignment was first discussed I immediately knew what country I was going to do my project on. My mother is Mexican and living and visiting family in states like Colorado, New Mexico, Arizona, and Texas I have always been exposed to Mexican/Mexican American culture. My family and I always follow Mexican traditions like Three Kings Day, making tamales before and after Christmas, and cooking traditionally. Even though it is hard for me to admit because I have a lot of pride in my heritage and my country there are many socioeconomic issues present in Mexico. Corruption in the Mexican government was an easy choice for a topic since over the years and especially in 2017 there was an overabundance of Mexican politicians being criticized and apprehended by the state for crooked political behaviors.
There was not too much change in my initial question and my thesis because I felt I couldn't go wrong with corruption for a paper. I expected to get a deeper understanding of the issue I already had some knowledge about but upon researching, I realized quickly that the problem was worse than I had thought. There were so many stories and connections to my topic that I got overwhelmed and in turn used and placed evidence in my paper very poorly. Recently, stories pertaining to my topic illustrate more public unrest and lack of faith in the government despite promises made by officials. For example, the National Anti-Corruption System put in place by President Peña Nieto is still ineffective and the citizens of Mexico are furious he cannot deliver. There have not been any recent protests although that is subject to change any day as Peña Nieto approval ratings decrease.
